LAKEPORT — Athlete of the Year finalist Shaelyn McIntire of Clear Lake High School will be featured in the Wednesday print edition of the Lake County Record-Bee.
McIntire, who graduated in late May, played volleyball and basketball for the Cardinals during the 2019-20 high school sports season, earning All-League first-team honors in volleyball. She is one five girls nominated for the Athlete of the Year award, joining Kelseyville’s Allison Bryant and Middletown’s Sophie Kucer, Abbey Brown and Brianna Alves.
Boys finalists are Middletown’s Jared Pyzer, Lower Lake’s Vann Wilkins and Clear Lake’s Jaron Mertle, Darius Ford and Travis Howe.
All 10 finalists will be featured in full-page pullouts that run in the print edition only. After the 10 finalists appear, the Athlete of the Year winners and Coach of the Year winners also will appear in full-page pullouts in the print edition of the newspaper. McIntire is the second girls finalist and fourth finalist overall to be introduced, following Kelseyville’s Bryant, Middletown’s Pyzer and Clear Lake’s Mertle.
Individual and businesses are welcome to sponsor an athlete or multiple athletes. A portion of the proceeds raised will be returned to the athletes in the form of scholarships. Email smcgrath@record-bee.com if interested.
Athlete of the Year finalists and winners are selected by the Record-Bee based on their athletic achievements during the high school sports season and with plenty of input from coaches and sports officials. Candidates must be juniors or seniors who are in good academic standing at their respective schools. Usually candidates are required to play two varsity sports although that condition has been waved this year because the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the 2020 spring sports season.
Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year winners also will be honored with full-length stories that will appear in both print and online editions at a future date.
