LAKE COUNTY — Nearly a year ago today in Lake County high school sports, the Clear Lake High School and Kelseyville High School varsity volleyball teams scored home victories in their North Central League I openers.
Until the COVID-19-delayed 2020-21 sports season gets underway, which isn’t expected to occur until Dec. 14 at the earliest, the Lake County Record-Bee will take a look back at the high school happenings of a year ago and the teams and athletes who were making the headlines.

The Clear Lake Cardinals spotted the Lower Lake Trojans the first set, then rallied nicely for a 24-26, 25-19, 25-21, 25-11 victory in Lakeport. Captain Shaelyn McIntire, a senior, powered the Cardinals with 14 kills and 11 digs, both team highs. Other standouts were Daijanae Landers, who added six kills and two blocks, and Cady Harmon with 14 assists.

Clear Lake also received solid play off its bench, including four kills from Natalie Perry, who replaced an ailing Joy Ingalls in the fourth set and provided her team with a spark, according to Clear Lake head coach Marci Psalmonds.
Lower Lake’s Shelby Sapeta, a senior, led the Trojans with 20 digs and four kills. The Trojans’ small front line had trouble generating much of an attack against the bigger Cardinals, according to Lower Lake head coach Niki Emberson.
Meanwhile at Kelseyville, the Knights began what turned out to be another undefeated league campaign (14-0) with a quick 25-11, 25-17, 25-21 victory over the visiting Fort Bragg Timberwolves.

Kelseyville senior Allison Bryant overpowered Fort Bragg up front, a familiar storyline as the four-year varsity veteran would go on to win another league most valuable player award while leading the Knights to a 22-6 season and North Coast Section playoff appearance. She is now a member of the Catawba College squad in Salisbury, North Carolina.
