ANDERSON — The fourth race on the North State Modified Series 2020 schedule, presented by Protect the Harvest, visits Shasta Speedway in Anderson on Saturday for the annual Lloyd Burton Against the Wind Modified Challenge.
It’s the richest race in the seven-year history of the NSMS with $2,000 going to the winner. Just starting the 60-lap race earns each driver $400.
The event honors the memory of Lloyd Burton, a longtime supporter of auto racing in the Redding-Chico area. He served as the head official at Shasta Speedway in the 1990s when the facility was promoted by Bob Carrel. Burton also was the head official at Lakeport Speedway for five years and he officiated at several other tracks in Northern California. A native of Shasta County, Burton was involved in racing and promoting his entire adult life. He founded the Northern California Auto Racing Alumni (NCARA) as well.
Burton’s brother-in-law, Mort Houston and NSMS driver Simi Tour with the Great American Seed Company, are both sponsoring the increased drivers purse.
This memorial event first ran in 2016 with Jason Philpot of Sacramento the winner. In 2017, Darrin Sullivan of Kelseyville took home the first0place money and the trophy. Kris Price of Sacramento came out on top in 2018, and Ukiah’s Kyle Tellstrom won last year. The names of all the winning drivers appear on the 4-foot tall, handcaved, custom perpetual trophy that resides in the North State Modified Series office in Lucerne.
The North State Modified Series is presented by Protect the Harvest, Lucas Oil, Hoosier Tire West, Sunoco Race Fuels, Naake Suspension, Five Star Bodies, Racer Bling, Mark & Sharon Baldwin, Scribner Plastics, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Economy Heating and Air, GASCO and Mort Houston.
