LAKE COUNTY — The undefeated Westshore varsity youth football team certainly made a statement in its league game played nearly a year ago today at Upper Lake High School.

Until the COVID-19-delayed 2020-21 sports season starts in December, the Lake County Record-Bee will take a look back at the local sports happenings of a year ago and the teams and athletes who were making the headlines.

Youth football

Entering play with a 6-0 record, Westshore’s impressive varsity squad didn’t have much of a problem improving to 7-0 with a 49-30 victory over a first-year Northshore program, which made the score a bit more respectable with a late touchdown.

The Cardinals built up a big lead and cruised to the victory, getting key plays on offense and defense, including one wild scramble for a fumble that Westshore’s Adrian Truby finally pounced on to give possession of the ball back to the Cardinals.

Northshore gave a good account of itself but didn’t have the size or speed to keep up with its Westshore counterparts.

Westshore's Adrian Truby (9) falls on a fumble after a wild scramble for the loose ball during the varsity team's win over Northshore.

Westshore went on to take a perfect record (10-0) into the Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League varsity championship game in early November only to be upset by Kelseyville 27-19. Middletown’s Pee Wee and junior varsity teams won their respective championships to cap the 2019 season.

No youth football has taken place since then because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the MLEJFL to cancel its entire 2020 schedule back in early July.
