LAKE COUNTY — There were no shortage of big shots made by Lake County athletes during the 2019-20 high school basketball season, and Emily Sandoval’s last-second dagger was certainly one of the biggest.
With the start of the 2020-21 high school sports season delayed until at least January because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lake County Record-Bee is taking a look back at the players and the teams who were making headlines during the 2019-20 season.

Sandoval’s game-winning shot lifted the Kelseyville High School junior varsity girls basketball team to a dramatic 34-32 win over the Upper Lake Cougars in the championship game of the Facey Family Tournament, which took place nearly a year ago today at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport.

The two teams were locked in a 32-all tie as the final seconds ticked off the clock. Sandoval launched a shot from the corner just before time ran out and the ball settled through the net to give the Knights, who were still undefeated at the time, the victory.
Sandoval finished with 14 points while teammate Kaylei Davis added 11. Larue Furlani, who scored a team-best 16 in an earlier tournament win over Cloverdale, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
Heaven’Lee Loans Arrow led the Cougars with nine points and All-Tourney selection Lupy Monlo-Duncan had seven.
Both teams went on to post solid finishes in their respective leagues — Kelseyville in the North Central League I and Upper Lake in the NCL II.
