Clear Lake High School freshman Hannah Garrity stretches at the start of cross country practice Monday afternoon in Lakeport. Tammy Lisk returns for her second season as head coach of the Cardinals albeit a delayed second season as the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the opening of what was supposed to be the 2020 fall campaign to mid-winter of the 2020-21 school year. Garrity and teammate Parisee Cemendtaur, a junior, were the only two runners present when Monday’s practice opened although there are other runners on the team, according to Lisk. The Cardinals as well as Lake County’s other cross country teams will hold their first meet at the end of this month or early next month. It’s the first high school sport to commence play since mid-March of 2020. The pandemic has already canceled the fall sports of football, volleyball and soccer as well as the winter sports of basketball and wrestling in Lake County. Golf, tennis and track and field will get under way as soon as next week. Baseball and softball cannot play games until Lake County reaches the red tier (one step up from the current purple tier) on the state’s color-coded chart for sports activity.
