LOWER LAKE — Ruth M. Schindler, at 100 years of age, is one of the few living World War II Veterans in the county. Schindler received a thank you letter and a pin in recognition from the Veterans Administration and Hospice Services of Lake County last week. Pictured from left to right: Schindler, Dave Waldschmitt and in the background is Julie Vonada watching as Waldschmitt hands Schindler the thank you letter. Shortly following her 21st birthday, Ruth was deployed in the autumn of 1941. She boarded the Queen Mary, which was a fast ship for its time, with at least one hundred other nurses and thousands of troops. Schindler served as a First Lieutenant Army nurse caring for 80 injured or wounded soldiers at a time as did her colleagues.
