Lakeport Fire Protection District Board announces appointment of new Fire Chief

The Lakeport Fire Protection District Board of Directors announced the appointment of Salt Lake City Battalion Chief Jeffrey James Thomas to serve as the new Fire Chief for the Lakeport Fire Protection District effective March 29, 2021.  Chief Thomas has worked for the City Fire Department in Salt Lake City, Utah for 36 years.  The Chief was born and raised in northern California before moving to Utah on a football scholarship and beginning his lengthy career in the fire service.  Chief Thomas is looking forward to returning home closer to family and serving the community in and around Lakeport.

John Whitehead, Chair of the Board of Directors stated, “We are thrilled with Chief Thomas and what he will bring to our District.  The District was fortunate to have three excellent candidates to interview, but both our Board and a separate panel made up of representatives of our professional firefighters, volunteer firefighters, and other public safety partners unanimously agreed that Chief Thomas was the best fit for the Department based on his professionalism, charisma, high level of training and experience, and existing love for the area. I hope you will join us in welcoming Chief Thomas as the next Fire Chief of the Lakeport Fire Protection District.”

Thompson, legislators introduce the Increase Federal Disaster Cost Share Act

This week, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05), House Transportation and Infrastructure Chair Peter DeFazio (OR-06), Rep. Lucille Royball-Allard (CA-40), Rep. Doug LaMalfa (CA-01), and Rep. Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) introduced the Increase Federal Disaster Cost Share Act. This bipartisan bill would boost the Federal cost share from 75 to 90 percent for any federally declared disasters in 2020. Thompson was joined by original coauthors representing many districts hit hard by bad fires during the Coronavirus crisis.

“Far too many districts like ours have been hit hard by fires during the COVID-19 pandemic, a dual burden on our local governments that are already stretched too thin. The Federal government can and must help during these double crises,” said Thompson. “That’s why I’ve reintroduced the Increase Federal Disaster Cost Share Act, a bipartisan bill to boost the Federal financial responsibility and help our local governments already working overtime to respond to disasters and maintain essential services.”
