County Library offers technology class

The Lake County Library is offering a free class to help residents stay in touch with their family members by using technology. The class will be online through Zoom on Friday at 1 PM. Participants will learn more about apps like Facetime, Skype, and Zoom that they can
use to stay connected with friends and family. The class will end with a question and answer session. Members of the public can register for free by calling the Lake County Library at 707-263-8817.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the class is offered over Zoom. If anyone needs help getting started with Zoom they can call the Lakeport Library and Amy Patton will be happy to help them get started over the phone. Learning to use new technology can be daunting at first, but Amy will help make it easy. Anyone who needs assistance can reach Amy by calling 707-263-8817 extension 17105.

Even if residents don’t have their own device to attend the class, the library can help. All branches of the Lake County Library have Google Chromebooks that can be borrowed with a library card. Chromebooks are small laptop computers that can be used to browse the internet and are very easy to use. Anyone can use the library’s Wi-Fi from the parking lot to attend the class.

The library is working with Teens Teach Technology, a youth organization dedicated to helping seniors and adults learn about technology. The group, based on Long Island, provides online lessons on using technology, from iPhones to computers. They are partnering with libraries to offer their services.

Learning to use technology to better communicate with friends and family is an important skill. While a simple phone call can help people stay in touch, using video apps like Facetime or Zoom can really enhance social interaction. These skills can also be used for video visits with healthcare or to visit distant relatives without the need to travel.

LAKEPORT

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday 10 to 2 p.m.

The Lakeport Police Department is participating in the United States Drug Enforcement Administration National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 24, 2021  between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The event will be held as a drive-through drop off on the west side of he police station at 2025 South Main Street, Lakeport. Physical distancing and face masks will be required. Persons arriving at the event are to stay in their vehicles and will be directed by police staff to the drop-off location.

Accepted: All over-the-counter or prescription medication in pill, tablet or capsule form including schedule II-V controlled and non-controlled substances.

Pills need to be emptied out of their containers and placed in a zip lock plastic bag (not paper), so we can easily identify the contents. We will collect vape pens or other e-cigarette devices from individual consumers only after the batteries are removed from the devices. It is important to stress that we will not be responsible for removing the batteries from the devices.

Not Accepted: Illegal drugs, needles, inhalers, or aerosol cans.

Since LPD started participating with the Prescription Take Back program in January of 2019, we have collected 634 pounds of prescription drugs, many of which were dangerous narcotics including opioids. This activity protects our community and keeps these drugs from being diverted to illegal use and out of our environment and water.

LAKE COUNTY

Rescheduled: County of Lake, Lake County Risk Reduction Authority to host virtual Town Hall Thursday, May 6

Late last week, portions of Lake County were under Elevated Fire Weather Conditions, per the National Weather Service.  Dry fuel conditions typically seen later in the year have already been present, meaning hardening our homes and communities against wildfire is an urgent need.

“Essentially all of us in Lake County have been personally affected by wildfire,” relates Jessica Pyska, District 5 Supervisor and member of the Lake County Risk Reduction Authority (LCRRA) Board of Directors.  “Each of the past six years has brought evacuations, and many, including my family, have lost homes. This has taught us that all residents must embrace Firewise practices to keep our families, friends and neighbors safe.  It is especially critical in an unusually dry year like this one.”

To help all of us prepare, Pyska, LCRRA colleague and District 1 Supervisor, Moke Simon, the County of Lake and the Lake County Risk Reduction Authority are hosting “Preparing for Fire Season,” a Virtual Town Hall Meeting, Thursday, May 6, at 6 p.m.

Questions will be taken during the live meeting via Zoom Chat.  You can also email questions ahead, to vision@lakecountyca.gov.

“We have an awesome panel, and this is going to be an amazing event,” affirms Simon.  “Each of the presenters is a true expert, and participants will learn about their individual responsibilities to harden their properties, and Firewise practices for everything from Defensible Space and Hazardous Vegetation Abatement to smarter Landscaping.  There will even be a virtual raffle!”
