LOWER LAKE — Middletown High School’s Forrest Devine, Isaac Rascon and Grayson Rockwell each came away with a pair of first-place finishes Wednesday during a Coastal Mountain Conference track meet at Lower Lake High School.
Kelseyville and St. Helena also took part in the competition.
“It went smooth,” Lower Lake co-head coach Mike Huffman said of hosting his first track meet. “We haven’t hosted one in a couple of years because of COVID. It’s just nice to have the kids back outside doing things again.”
The 2020 season was canceled even before it began in Lake County because of the outbreak of the coronavirus in March of that year. One thing that hasn’t changed since 2019, which is the last year track and field was held in the county, is the dominance locally of the Middletown program. Both the boys and girls scored team wins Wednesday.
“They’ve got a lot of good runners,” Huffman said of the Mustangs.
Boys
Middletown finished with 48 points to 38 for St. Helena, 21 for Lower Lake and 1 for Kelseyville. For the victorious Mustangs, Devine won the 200-meter run in 24.9 seconds and the 400 in 54.18. He had competition locally from Lower Lake’s Anthony Hills in both events. Hills finished third in the 200 at 25.8 and third in the 400 at 59.24 while participating in his first track meet.
Devine added a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 3 inches.
Rascon, fresh off Middletown’s cross country season during which he went undefeated, won the 1,600 and 3,200. In the 1,600, he posted a 4:51 mark while Lower Lake’s Angelo Pelcastre was secon at 5:01. In the 3,200, Rascon crossed the finish line in 10:55, beating out Lower Lake’s Jose Hernandez (12:47) and Kelseyville’s Elliott Mayo (13:17).
Rockwell dominated the field in the discus (108-6) and shotput (38-7). The top three finishers in both events were from Lake County. In the discus, it was Rockwell, Middletown’s Robert Chaires (100-9) and Lower Lake’s Elijah Cooke (88-6), and in the shotput it was Rockwell, Middletown’s Brody Breeden (38-1) and Cooke (36-2).
Jackson Scheibal of Middletown added a first in the high jump, clearing 5-8. Breeden was second at 5-6 and and teammate Parker Boden came in third at 5-4.
Other event winners were Daniel Martinez of St. Helena in the long jump (17-0) and triple jump (35-7), with Middletown’s Scheibal taking second in the long jump (16-8) and Devine third. Also for St. Helena, Samuel Raunegge won the 100 in 12.58, edging out Lower Lake’s John Sabela (12.61) and Middletown’s Caleb Sternberg (12.81).
Another St. Helena winner was Keaton McSast in the 800 (2:12) with Lower Lake’s Pelcastre (2:13) right behind him in second.
In the relay events, St. Helena won the 4×100 (48.58) while meet host Lower Lake captured the 4×400 as the team of Pelcastre, Hills, Sabela and Leo Brown won in 3:56.
No hurdle events were held.

Double-event winners were Amanda Hart of Middletown in the shotput (24-11) and discus (63-10), Eva Bowen of St. Helena in the 100 (13.40) and 200 (27.9), and Harper McClain of St. Helena in the 800 (2:33) and 1,600 (5:13.81).
Other Lake County event winners were Georgia Guerrero of Middletown in the 400 (1:07), Erica Kinsel of Middletown in the 3,200 (15:08), and Summer Anderson of Kelseyville and Mariah Ketchum of Middletown, co-winners of the high jump at 4-6.
Lower Lake’s Katelyn Ferrell tied Hart for top honors in the shotput, both with tosses of 24-11, and Ferrell also had a personal-best throw of 56-11 to finish second in the discus.
