LOWER LAKE — Middletown High School’s mountain bike team had 10 riders place fourth or higher Saturday during the first of three NorCal Cycling League races scheduled for the Six Sigma Ranch and Winery course this season.
Middletown competes in the Redwood region, one of five regions in the NorCal Cycling League. Riders from the other four NorCal regions — Repack, Capitol, East Bay and Central — also took part in races held either Saturday and Sunday on the 6.2-mile Six Sigma course, one that features a 700-foot elevation gain. Medals were awarded to the top five finishers in all divisions.
Because of COVID-19 restrictions, riders in all divisions race only one lap this season. There is also no team scoring this year during a shortened 2021 campaign.
The Middletown team, now in its fifth year of existence, had two divisional winners Saturday. Camille Schaffer won the sophomore girls division with a time of 40 minutes, 46.37 seconds, and Dean McComas won freshman boys division two in 38:43.73.
Middletown riders bringing home second-place medals were Kamilah Chairez in the sophomore girls division (1:03:00.39); Steven Beckstead in JV boys division two (32:15.53); Ryan Schneider in sophomore boys division two (37:45.29); and Jacob Brown in freshman boys division two (44:38.48).
Earning third-place medals were Leslie Chairez in the JV girls division (58:08.64); Kieran McSween in JV boys division two (33:38.62); and Logan Wood in sophomore boys division two (43:46.88).
A fourth-place medal went to Chase Wink in sophomore boys division two (48:13.35).
The Middletown riders return to action May 1 at Six Sigma. They compete there again May 15 in the final race of the season.
Clear Lake and Kelseyville high schools, members of the NorCal Cycling League in past years, are not fielding teams this season.
