The Shade Canyon School charter petition is now available for interested parents to sign from May 4 until May 18 at Studebakers Coffee Shop and Deli on Main Street in Kelseyville or at Mo’s Fusion Café, the drive-thru next to Store 24 in Middletown.

These signatures from “meaningfully interested” parents are a crucial part of demonstrating Lake County families’ desire for Shade Canyon to be authorized as a tuition-free, Waldorf-inspired public charter school.

To sign, parents may request the Shade Canyon petition clipboard. If unable to sign in person, parents may also sign the petition online: https://form.jotform.com/Canyon_Shade/parent-signatures-charter-petition.

Over 30 families signed the petition at the first Shade Canyon May Faire on Saturday, May 1, where co-founder Morgan Chinnock began adding the children’s first names to the “Shade Canyon Origins” painting that she plans to hang one day in the school’s office. Names from the rest of the families that sign the petition will complete the painting.

Shade Canyon will submit the parent signatures, along with the full petition, to the Kelseyville Unified School District (KVUSD) Board on May 21. If authorized, the school would open in September of 2022 with grades transitional kindergarten through third grade, then expand by one grade each year until it offers a full TK/K-8 program. All Lake County students would be eligible to attend tuition-free.
