LOWER LAKE — And that’s a wrap for the now-you-see-it, now-you-don’t 2021 NorCal Cycling League season.
Shortened to three races in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the third and final racing weekend took place Saturday and Sunday on the 8.2-mile Six Sigma Ranch and Winery course near Lower Lake. Six Sigma hosted all three NorCal races this season, accommodating mountain bikers from five different regions, including the Redwood region that features Lake County riders, most of them members of the Middletown High School Mountain Bike Team.
Middletown’s squad raced Saturday afternoon and six Mustangs earned a spot on the podium (which honors the top five in each division). Another Middletown rider, Steven Beckstead, raced as an independent and placed third in the JV boys division two.
Middletown’s lone division winner was Camille Schaffer, first among sophomore girls with a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes, 24.68 seconds. Teammate Kamilah Chairez was second at 1:37:56.66.
After Beckstead’s third-place finish in JV boys division two in 44 minutes, 36.49 seconds, Middletown’s Kieran McSween came in third at 48:26.29.
Also for Middletown, Leslie Chairez finished second in the JV girls division (1:20:27.36); Ryan Schneider (50:53.16) was fourth, Logan Wood sixth (1:02:54.43) and Chase Wink seventh (1:07:39.16) in sophomore boys division two; and Dean McComas (58:59.99) placed third and Jacob Brown sixth (1:03:36.29) in freshman boys division two.
Samantha Wood served as head coach for the Middletown team.
