Sophie Kucer’s straight-set victory in singles, pair of three-set doubles wins lift M’town

KELSEYVILLE — Sophie Kucer’s straight-set win in No. 2 singles and a pair of three-set victories in doubles propelled the Middletown Mustangs to a season-ending 3-2 Coastal Mountain Conference tennis win over the Kelseyville Knights on Tuesday afternoon in Kelseyville.

“It was a real nice way to end the season,” Middletown head coach Tracey Kucer said of the 2021 finale for both teams.

Sophie Kucer beat Larue Furlani 6-1, 6-0 for Middletown’s lone singles win. The other two singles matches went to Kelseyville as Johnny Rixen beat Paige Astley 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles while Ryann Taylor defeated Olivia Kucer 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles.

In doubles action, Middletown’s Joe and John Reynoso didn’t win a single game in the first set but rallied for a 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Hanna Scully and Rylan Lipscomb. Lara Patterson and Reese Caldwell also needed three sets to get past the No. 2 Kelseyville doubles team of Sam Carter and Maddy Madrzyk 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
