MAXWELL — The Westshore Little League 10-under Softball All-Stars advanced to the consolation bracket championship game in the District 2 Tournament with an 18-12 victory over Sutter Area Little League on Wednesday evening in Maxwell.
Westshore, now 3-1 in the double-elimination tournament, took on Colusa on Thursday night in an elimination game. The winner advances to the District 2 finals Friday night at 7 p.m. against undefeated Marysville, the team that handed Westshore its only loss to date. If Westshore beats Colusa to reach the championship round against Marysville, it would have to beat Marysville twice to secure the District 2 title because of the double-elimination format. If a second championship game is necessary, it would take place Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Maxwell.
Westshore opened the District 2 Tournament with an 11-5 victory over the same Sutter Area Little League team it beat again Wednesday evening. Sophia Gonzales pitched six strong innings and was backed by a productive Westshore lineup led by Madison Byrne. Jordyn Wurm, who hit a three-run homer in a 17-6 win over Live Oak Little League on Tuesday night, added another three-run extra-base hit, this time a bases-clearing triple, to put Westshore ahead to stay in the bottom of the fifth inning. The team tacked on five more insurance runs after that.
Beside the pitching of Gonzales and production from up and down the batting order, Westshore also made several nice plays in the field.
After beating Sutter Area Little League 17-6 in its first All-Star game on June 17, Westshore dropped a 10-3 decision to Marysville on Sunday evening. The team has since bounced back with two straight wins — over Live Oak and Sutter Area — to reach the consolation bracket finals.
