MAXWELL — Cali Albaum pitched three strong innings before teammate Sophia Gonzales slammed the door as the Westshore Little League 10-and-under Softball All-Stars completed their march through the consolation bracket of the District 2 Tournament with a 24-14 four-inning victory over Colusa Little League on Thursday in Maxwell.
The win moves Westshore, now 4-1 in tournament play, into the tournament championship round against undefeated Marysville, a 10-3 winner over Westshore last weekend. Because of the double-elimination format of the tournament, Westshore needs to beat Marysville twice to claim the District 2 title. The teams played Friday at 7 p.m. in game one. A Westshore win would set up a winner-take-all game two showdown Saturday at 7 p.m. in Maxwell.
In their most recent win over Colusa, the Westshore All-Stars received contributions at the plate from players up and down their batting order. They also took advantage of a highlight-reel defensive gem from Hailey Perez, who made a sensational catch in center field.
Westshore opened tournament play last week with an 11-5 victory over Sutter Area Little League. After being knocked into the conoslation bracket by Marysville, the team has responded with three straight victories, beating Live Oak Little League 17-6, Sutter Area Little League in a rematch 18-12, and Colusa Little League.
