MAXWELL — A great postseason run for the Westshore Little League 10-and-under Softball All-Stars ended with a 19-4 lost to an undefeated Marysville Little League team Friday evening in the championship game of the District 2 Tournament at Maxwell.

Although Westshore grabbed an early 2-1 lead — the first time Marysville had trailed in the entire tournament — it proved shortlived. Marysville’s patient batters worked deep into the count and drew numerous walks to quickly regain the lead and pull away for the District 2 championship win.

Had Westshore won, a second championship game would have been played Saturday night because of the double-elimination format. Westshore went 4-2 during the tournament and its only two losses were to Marysville, including 10-3 setback earlier in the tournament. Westshore came back to win three straight games in the consolation bracket to earn a rematch with Marysville in the finals.

While every Westshore player had a special moment during the tournament, pitcher Sophia Gonzales worked 26 innings over eight days to lead the team.

It’s the second straight time Westshore’s 10-and-under team has reached the District 2 finals after also qualifying in 2019 (no tournament was held last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic).

During what turned out to be the final game of Westshore’s season, $750 was raised for the family of a Marysville player whose father died last week.
