Enhanced traffic enforcement operation yields stolen vehicle recovery, DUI arrest and citations

On Saturday June 26, 2021, officers from the Clearlake Police Department conducted a traffic enforcement special operation.

Officers conducted numerous traffic stops resulting in three citations for speed violations, four citations for moving violations and eight citations for mechanical violations were issued. Two people were arrested with active warrants for their arrest, two people were issued citations for driving on suspended driver licenses and one person was cited for operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Officers made one arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Another arrest was made after officers stopped and recovered a stolen vehicle out of Lakeport. That incident resulted in a brief closure of Highway 53.

With the summer months and vacations underway there tends to be an increase in traffic volume, traffic related incidents, collisions, and impaired driving. In a recent local survey, speeding and impaired driving were identified as top concerns from the public. There is also an increased concern of speeding vehicles in the area commonly referred to as the “Avenues” due to the recent road improvements.

The Clearlake Police Department would like to remind drivers that speeding, not wearing your seatbelt and distracted driving can put you and others in danger. It is also important that if you plan on drinking alcohol, taking medication, or other substances which would impair your driving, plan for a sober driver or stay home.

Remembering a friend

This week we lost a great friend and a pillar of our community, Jim Walker. Jim was more than a friend, a mentor, or instructor. Jim helped out in the community and was a huge reason the Clearlake K9 Unit had a successful fundraising event every year.

Jim was there from the beginning helping us plan and host what has become an annual K9 fundraiser. Not only was he there to guide us, but he was also there helping throughout the event and was one heck of an auctioneer!

Because of the K9 event, many of us were able to know Jim on a personal level and we were able to call him a true friend. He loved his wife, his family, and his community, which showed in everything he did.
Jim you will be missed and we are honored and privileged to have known you and call you our friend. Till we see you again, rest easy knowing you left an impression that won’t be forgotten.

Counterfeit bills received at Farmers’ Market

Last week LPD received a report from two Farmers’ Market vendors of receipt of counterfeit $100 bills. The suspects were described as: a medium complected adult man in his 30s wearing a gray tank top and gray sweatpants, with two lines tattooed under his right eye; and, a light complected adult woman with one or more missing front teeth and an A-line hair-style wearing a white and blue colored “sun” dress. The counterfeit bills collected were the new series $100 bills. Please report any similar activity to the LPD, or your nearest law enforcement jurisdiction.

California Secures Federal Assistance to Support Response to Lava Fire in Siskiyou County

Gov., Gavin Newsom today announced that California has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help ensure the availability of vital resources to suppress the Lava Fire burning in Siskiyou County.

The FMAG, which is provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund on cost-share basis, will assist local, state and tribal agencies responding to the fire to apply for 75 percent reimbursement of their eligible fire suppression costs.

The Lava Fire has burned more than 13,330 acres, forcing evacuations in the communities of Lake Shastina and Juniper Valley.

The Siskiyou County Emergency Operations Center has been activated and Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) staff are on site to support local agencies as they respond to the emergency. Cal OES is also mobilizing mutual aid strike teams and firefighters to support the response.

CAL FIRE, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department and other mutual aid resources are also on scene working in Unified Command with the United States Forest Service.
