OLIVEHURST — The Westshore Little League 10-and-under Baseball All-Stars wrapped up a perfect run through the District 2 Tournament on Wednesday evening by beating Sutter Area Little League 11-6 in the championship game.
Westshore won all four of its games in the double-elimination tournament. D’Avian Horn led the way in the championship game, going 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Sutter took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Westshore tied it with a run in the bottom half and then pushed ahead to stay with a big six-run second inning.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth before Westshore increased its lead to 11-2 with a three-run fifth. Sutter rallied for four runs in its final at-bat in the top of the sixth.
Shawn Rangel, the first of three Westshore pitchers, worked the first three innings for the victory, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out five and walking five. Chase Allred worked scoreless fourth and fifth innings, blanking Sutter on three hits, striking out four and walking none. Twenty-one of his 37 pitches were strikes.
Westshore’s defense committed only two errors compared to six for Sutter.
The Sutter Area All-Stars advanced out of the consolation bracket to reach the District 2 finals. Their only two tournament losses were to the Westshore All-Stars, who they lost to 10-5 last weekend. Had Sutter Area won Wednesday, a second championship game would have taken place Thursday because of the double-elimination tournament format.
Westshore’s postseason odyssey continues July 15 against District 26 champion McKinleyville in the opening round of the Northern California Section 2 Tournament in Yuba City. First pitch is 8 p.m.
