The recent passage of Assembly Bill 130 in the California State Legislature has resulted in significant changes to Independent Study as an educational option for students and their families.

For the 2021-22 school year, in-person instruction is offered for KVUSD students and families at the following school sites:

  • Kelseyville High School
  • Ed Donaldson High School
  • Mountain Vista Middle School
  • Kelseyville Elementary School
  • Riviera Elementary School

For the 2021-22 school year, independent study is offered for all KVUSD students and families at Kelseyville Learning Academy (KLA).

KLA is a grades TK-12 independent study school that provides each student with a credentialed teacher, curriculum resources, grade-level appropriate instructional plans and opportunities for live online instruction. High school students at KLA are provided access to all course offered at Kelseyville High School and Ed Donaldson High School, including all required courses for high school graduation, University of California and California State University required courses (a-g requirements), Dual Enrollment courses through Mendocino College and Advanced Placement courses.

The following information only applies to students enrolled in Kelseyville Learning Academy.

Parents/Guardians interested in enrolling their student in Kelseyville Learning Academy may request a pupil-parent-educator conference meeting prior to enrollment.

To request a meeting, please contact the KVUSD Welcome Center at 707-279-1511, x1033.

Parents/Guardians have the right to enroll, dis-enroll and re-enroll in independent study at any time. Requests for a change of enrollment need to be submitted in writing to the school principal. Once an enrollment request is submitted, KVUSD will ensure the change in placement occurs in five or fewer days.

AB 130 includes some important requirements regarding independent study, live interaction between students and teachers, and synchronous instruction.

Live interaction – Interaction between the pupil and KVUSD classified or certificated staff, and may include peers, provided for the purpose of maintaining school connectedness, including, but not limited to, wellness checks, progress monitoring, and provision of services, and instruction. This interaction may take place in person, or in the form of internet or telephonic communication.

Synchronous instruction – Classroom-style instruction or designated small group or one-on-one instruction delivered in person, or in the form of internet or telephonic communications, and involving live two-way communication between the teacher and student. Synchronous instruction shall be provided by the teacher of record for each student.

For the 2021-22 school year, the following independent study interaction requirements apply to all students enrolled at Kelseyville Learning Academy.

TK through Grade 3: Opportunities for daily synchronous instruction for all pupils throughout the school year.

Grades 4 to 8: Opportunities for both daily live interaction and at least weekly instruction for all pupils synchronous throughout the school year.

Grades 9 to 12: Opportunities for at least weekly synchronous instruction for all pupils throughout the school year.
