UPPER LAKE — Quarterback Johnny Cruz rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another as the Northshore Cougars varsity youth football team beat Fort Bragg 33-6 on Sunday at Upper Lake High School.

Northshore squared its season record in the Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League standings at 1-1.

Cruz scored on runs of 17, 55 and 47 yards. He connected with Sneed on a short pass that turned into a 55-yard score. Northshore’s final touchdown was an Aaron Bowman 76-yard kickoff return following a Fort Bragg score.

Defensive standouts for the Cougars were outside linebacker Wyatt Anderson, middle linebeacker Jacob Weldon, Dylan Aragon, Jayden Smith and Zachquez Sanders.

Northshore has the Labor Day weekend off before returning to action Sept. 11 at home against Lower Lake. Pee Wee action starts at 4 p.m. with the junior varsity and varsity games to follow.

Northshore’s JV squad improved to 2-0 with a 18-0 forfeit win over a Fort Bragg team that was missing several players because of a COVID-19 quarantine.

Pee Wee

After missing a scrimmage and its season opener against Westshore last week because of a COVID-19 quarantine, the Northshore Pee Wee club finally got its 2021 season under way with a 14-0 victory over Fort Bragg.

Northshore (1-1) scored in the first quarter on a Jaquobi Allison 55-yard run and in the second quarter on a 47-yard Allsion run. D’avian Horne ran in the first extra point and Gabriel Navarro had the second.

Bentley Brewer’s play on the defensive line played a big part in the win, according to coach Bradley Brackett.

“He was in their backfield all game. He caused havoc all over the place,” Brackett said.
