VACAVILLE — Lower Lake’s first points and first win of the 2021 football season will have to wait at least another week after the Trojans fell 34-0 to Vacaville Christian in their season opener on Friday night in Vacaville.

Lower Lake (0-1) was at a pretty big disadvantage entering play against a Falcons squad playing its third game of the season. The Trojans, who last took the field in November of 2019, are still shaking off the accumulated rust and roster turnover caused by nearly two years of inactivity.

Lower Lake’s offense struggled to move the ball all night. The defense had its moments, according to head coach Jeremy Jakubowski, including forcing a handful of punts and pulling off a goal-line stand late in the game to keep Vacaville Christian (3-0) from adding to its lead.

“We had trouble blocking them,” Jakubowski said. “They have a big, physical offensive line and they moved the ball well.”

Lower Lake’s longest gain from scrimmage was 10 yards, according to Jakubowski, and the Trojans had only a half-dozen plays that gained more than three yards.

“We had a lot of three and outs,” Jakubowski said.

Vacaville Christian led 22-0 at halftime.

Lower Lake suited up 21 players for the game. Three sustained injuries before it was over, one of which was minor while the other two were more serious (head and neck), according to Jakubowski.

“The kids never quit, we played hard the whole way,” Jakubowski said.

There was no junior varsity game.

Lower Lake returns home to play Miramonte next Friday at Gordon Sadler Stadium. Depending on the injury situation for the varsity, there may not be a JV game, according to Jakubowski.

Lower Lake-Vacaville Christian game statistics were not available.
