SANTA ROSA — Upper Lake High School sent two runners to the first North Central League II cross country meet of the 2021 season on Wednesday at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa, which was hosted by Sonoma Academy High School.

The nine teams that make up the NCL II — Upper Lake, Sonoma Academy, Calistoga, Roseland Collegiate Prep, Point Arena, Technology, Mendocino and Victory Academy — converge for four meets this season, held on every other Wednesday. Future NCL II meets are scheduled for Upper Lake on Sept. 22, Calistoga on Oct. 6, and Technology (Rohnert Park) on Oct. 20.

Competing for Upper Lake were first-year runners Jacob Colcleaser, a freshman, and Yesenia Chavira, a sophomore. Both were competing in a 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) race for the first time, according to Upper Lake head coach Samantha Ponts. Chavira finished 13th among the girls with a time of 32 minutes, 17 seconds. Colcleaser was 33rd in the boys race at 24:37.

Athena Ryan of Sonoma Academy won the boys race in 17:29. Lucy Gott of Sonoma Academy won the girls race in 19:21.

“We had a few runners unable to attend,” Ponts said. “I expect to have a team of five to six runners for our home meet on Sept. 22.”
