FORT BRAGG — The Kelseyville High School cross country team escaped the Lake County heat Wednesday as it opened a new season with a Coastal Mountain Conference meet against Willits and Fort Bragg in Fort Bragg.
The temperature didn’t climb above 60 degrees on the Mendocino County coast, according to Kelseyville head coach Becca Brookes.
“The wind was blowing pretty good. It was foggy, the air was moist. It was nice.”
Fort Bragg had the only complete team (at least five runners) in the girls division. There were no complete teams in the boys division, which also included Mendocino in the field.
Boys
Hector Alanis of Mendocino set the pace in the 13-runner boys field, covering the 3.1 miles in 18 minutes, 25 seconds. Kelseyville’s three entrants were Elliott Mayo, who placed third in 19:51; Alex Fordham, who was seventh in 22:34; and Evan Weller, eighth in 23:41.
“Elliott had a really good race,” Brookes said of the sophomore. “It was a really strong showing.”
Girls
Nicole Keough of Willits won the girls race in 21:33. For Kelseyville, Carly Vanderwall came in fifth in 25:12, Summer Anderson was eighth in 28:46, and Grace Agustinovich was 13th in 42:37.
Brookes said for both the Kelseyville girls and boys it was a good first effort.
“It was a nice, flat course,” she said.
Schedule
Kelseyville returns home next Wednesday to host Roseland University Prep of Santa Rosa and Clear Lake in a three-team meet that gets under way at 3:30 p.m.
