FORT BRAGG — A long Monday trip to Fort Bragg was well worth it for the Clear Lake High School co-ed soccer team, a 2-1 winner over the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in North Central League I action on the Mendocino County coast.

It was the first win of the season for Clear Lake’s co-ed squad, which competes against all-boys teams.

“Everybody was happy,” Clear Lake co-head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “It was a great, great team win, great to finally get the W.”

Miles Mattina’s goal, assisted by Orel Gosman in the 77th minute, provided the winning margin as it snapped a 1-1 tie that had existed since the 55th minute when Gosman’s penalty kick evened the game.

Fort Bragg scored in the eighth minute of the first half and held that 1-0 lead until Gosman’s goal midway through the second half.

“Our back line played a lot better after giving up that early goal,” O’Brien said.

Clear Lake has a bye Tuesday and returns to action Thursday at home against Middletown at 4 p.m.
