LAKEPORT — Mikel Compton ran for one touchdown and returned an interception for another score Saturday night as the undefeated Westshore Cardinals shut out Fort Bragg 42-0 in varsity-level action during a Mendo Lake Empire Junior Football League game at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport.

Ryken Villanueva also had a 30-yard punt return for a touchdown as Westshore improved to 6-0 in the varsity standings.

Westshore also scored on a 5-yard run by Jesse Hayes, who had three conversion kicks (worth two points apiece in youth football), on a 11-yard pass from Zane McAuley to Andrew Frace, and on a 2-yard run by Nathon Boomer.

“It was a total team effort,” Westshore head coach Derek Butcher said. “The offense played well, the defense played well, the second team played well, the first team played well and the special teams also had a big impact tonight.”

Westshore players also set a couple of firsts — first career TD reception by Frace and first career TD run by Boomer.

For the defense, Compton, Hayes and Sawyer Smith all had interceptions, and Smith also recovered a fumble.

“Things are definitely moving in the right direction and the best part of it is the kids are having fun, which makes it great,” Butcher said.
