MIDDLETOWN — Faced with the difficult task of beating the St. Helena Saints, Middletown’s varsity boys soccer team took its best shot Tuesday afternoon but came up short, 2-0, in a North Central League I game at Middletown.
Middletown, now 5-4-1 in league and and 7-5-1 overall, lost 8-2 to the Saints (8-1, 11-1) on Sept. 2 in St. Helena. St. Helena is chasing Cloverdale (9-0, 10-1-1) in the league standings as the final weeks of the 2021 season unfold. The Mustangs might not live in that high-rent district right now, but they’re still enjoying their best season in a long, long time under the direction of first-year head coach Roxi Hoogendoorn, who took over for first-year coach Michael Dodd after he resigned last month.
Middletown’s defense limited the Saints’ powerful offense to a single goal in each half, a big improvement from the eight goals the Mustangs allowed in their first meeting with the Saints, but Middletown’s offense couldn’t get untracked.
Middletown returns to action Friday in Lakeport against Clear Lake at 4 p.m.
