CALISTOGA — Upper Lake High School cross country runners Daniel Chavira and sister Yesenia Chavira took part in a Coastal Mountain Conference 3.1-mile race featuring all of the North Central League II schools Wednesday afternoon on the Pacific Union College Prep home course near Calistoga.
Race winners were Sonoma Academy’s Athena Ryan (16 minutes, 36 seconds) among the boys and Lucy Gott (19:15) among the girls.
The boys race was by far the day’s best as Ryan and Mendocino’s Hector Alanis (16:39) battled all the way to the finish line. Gott easily won the girls race as runner-up and teammate Sarah Kam (20:42) finished well behind her.
Daniel Chavira, only a freshman, finished 26th out of 57 runners in the boys race with a time of 21:43. Yesenia Chavira, a sophomore, placed 15th in the girls race at 29:37.
The runners enjoyed cool weather for the first time this season.
“It was perfect although my runners complained it was ‘so cold’,” Upper Lake head coach and Alaska native Samantha Ponts said. “It was a beautiful course and fast.”
The NCL II schools hold their final regular-season meet Oct. 20 in Rohnert Park where Technology High School will host.
