CORONADO >> Matt Wotherspoon of Buckingham, a member of the California State University-San Bernardino men’s golf team, took advantage of the NCAA winter offseason by finishing tied for 14th place last weekend in the Coronado City Amateur.

The Coronado City Am is a longtime fixture on the Southern California Golf Association’s competitive schedule.
Wotherspoon opened play Saturday by carding an even-par 72 at the Coronado Golf Club in San Diego County, a course designed by Billy Bell (Torrey Pines, Hidden Valley Lake). He returned Sunday to shoot a 2-over-par 74 for a 36-hole total of 2-over-par 146.
Wotherspoon said he was pleased with his play because of the strength of a field that included 84 scratch amateur golfers, most of them college golfers from area NCAA programs. His 14th-place finish not only earned him SCGA player performance points, but also $70 in pro shop script.
Jake Meloche of Coronado won the event with rounds of 69 and 66 for a 9-under-par 135 total. The runner-up was Charlie Palmer of Phoenix with rounds of 69 and 70 for a 139 total. Tyler Gulliksen of San Diego finished third with rounds of 71 and 70 for a 141 total.
The Coronado City Amateur is played in memory of longtime Coronado PGA professional John Ruedl.
