AMERICAN CANYON — Clear Lake High School’s wrestling squad placed first out of 12 teams and brought home three individual first-place medals Saturday during the American Canyon Tournament.
The tournament used 16-man brackets. Wrestlers who lost their first match could finish no higher than fifth.
Winning their weight classes were Gary White at 120 pounds, Mohammed Akbari at 132 pounds and Liam Davis at 152 pounds.
“I was very impressed with this kid,” Clear Lake assistant coach Gerard Fowler said of White. “He wrestled well for a first-year wrestler.”
Losing in the finals of their respective weight classes were Aiden Williamson at 138 pounds, Hayden Fowler in overtime at 145 pounds, Asher Reese at 160 pounds, and Anthony Gersalia at 195 pounds.
“He lost a tough first-place match with a seasoned wrestler,” Fowler said of Williamson.
Third-place medals went to Adrian Truby at 106 pounds and Robert Bruhn at 170 pounds.
Silas Reese came in fifth at 113 pounds while Carson Wilkstrom (195) and Orel Gosman (145) placed seventh. Schad Schweitzer was eighth at 145 pounds.
In the girls bracket, Anyssa Perez placed third at 121 pounds while also posting the tournament’s fastest pin in 13 seconds. Tara Wong finished fourth at 106 pounds.
Clear Lake topped the team standings even without entering wrestlers at 126, 220 and 285 pounds.
“We did better than expected but I believe we can do better,” Clear Lake head coach Tyler Hayes said. “Our upcoming tournaments are just going to get tougher as the level of competition increases.”
Clear Lake returns to action Saturday in the 14th annual Whitney Classic at Whitney High School in Rocklin.
