DURHAM — Cat Barriga and Hannah Gotz overwhelmed their competition Saturday as Middletown High School’s girls and junior varsity boys wrestlers competed in the Durham Tournament.

Barriga went 2-0 with two pins at 101 pounds to claim her second straight tournament title. Gotz pinned all three of her opponents at 138 pounds without giving up a single point.

“Caterina and Hannah both were dominant this weekend,” Middletown assistant coach Brian Hunt said.

Taylor Thompson finished second at 138 pounds with a 2-1 record, losing only to teammate Gotz in the finals, and Issy Barriga came in third at 101 pounds, her lone loss coming in the semifinals. Another third-place medal went to Mariah Ketchum at 143 pounds with a 2-1 record.

“Mariah Has now placed at every tournament this season,” Hunt said.

Kamilah Chairez (111), Pailey Shook (131) and Isabel Cortez (143) all finished fourth, just missing out on medals.

JV boys

For Middletown’s JV boys, Kayden Menzio placed second at 106 pounds, his third straight tournament second-place finish.

Third-place medals went to Steven Peterson, who went 3-1 at 195 pounds, including a very close overtime match that he won in the final seconds, and to Eddy Johnston at 145 pounds. He went 3-1 in one of the largest brackets at the tournament.

Middletown’s wrestlers are back in action Wednesday when the girls visit Albany and a small group of varsity boys participate in the Pinole X-Mas Classic. The entire Mustangs squad takes part in the Dennis Jensen Invitational Jan. 7-8 at Middletown High School.
