MIDDLETOWN — The Maria Carrillo Pumas went 4-for-4 from 3-point range in the first quarter, building a 17-9 lead and going on to defeat the Middletown Mustangs 52-33 in non-league varsity girls basketball action Tuesday night in Middletown.

It was the final game before the winter break for the Mustangs (7-5), who are looking forward to some time off, according to head coach Andy Brown.

“It’s overdue,” said of the rest his team needs after playing 10 games in the last 20 days. “We’ll come back with some fresh legs for league.”

The Pumas wasted no time jumping on the Mustangs.

“They came out red-hot on offense,” Brown said. “It kind of put the kids back on their heels.”

Middletown closed to four points late in the second quarter before Maria Carrillo pushed its lead back to eight by halftime at 26-18. After an 11-11 third quarter, the Pumas put the game away with a 15-4 final period.

“Maria Carrillo is a well-disciplined team and it was hard to get much going,” Brown said. “We had a pretty difficult time.”

Paige Astley’s nine points led Middletown, Skylar Williams added eight and Amanda Hart had six.

Middletown’s next schedule game is Jan. 5 at home against North Central League I opponent St. Helena.
