FORT BRAGG — A 23-2 first quarter fueled Clear Lake’s 52-20 victory over the Round Valley Warriors on Wednesday afternoon in the varsity girls bracket of the Fort Bragg Tournament, squaring the Cardinals’ record at 1-1.
Following a first-round 57-36 loss to Windsor on Tuesday, the Cardinals (4-6) bounced back in a big way behind 12 points from Sydney Howe, 10 from Amber Smart and nine from Montana Wells.
“A game that was good for us, one that will help us get back on track,” Clear Lake head coach Phil Psalmonds said.
Psalmonds moved Rubi Ford to the point and put Howe and Sierra Bruch on the wings against Round Valley and the switch worked well, according to Psalmonds. Smart’s 10 points were an added bonus.
“Hopefully a sign of things to come,” Psalmonds said. “If she can do that every game we’ll be in good shape. I was proud of the way she played.”
Bruch and Abby Mertle each finished with six points and Ford had five.
Clear Lake led 40-6 at the half.
The Cardinals draw the loser of a Wednesday game between Windsor and Trinity on Thursday at 3 p.m. as the tournament wraps up. Clear Lake is back on the road Monday for a North Central League I game at St. Helena, the first of three league games for the Cardinals next week.
