UKIAH — Middletown High School’s Mariah Ketchum won all three of her matches Saturday to claim the 143-pound girls weight class at the Redwood Empire Classic wrestling tournament in Ukiah.

“Mariah avenged an early league loss in the first round of the tournament,” Middletown assistant coach Brian Hunt said.

The Mustangs, who were fourth overall in the girls team standings, also picked up a second-place medal at 160 pounds where Krystal Ocken went 2-1.

Fourth-place finishes went to Nicole Pyzer at 101 pounds and Cat Barriga, who was wrestling up a weight class, at 106 pounds.

“This was our second tournament for the girls with mainly NCS (North Coast Section) opponents,” Hunt said. “They wrestled well and I like where we are at as we head toward the league and NCS tournaments.”

Varsity boys

David Sypnicki placed fifth at 138 pounds and Dominick Clark came in sixth at 113 pounds for the Middletown varsity boys.

Sypnicki’s only loss on the day was to the eventual 138-pound champion. Clark’s only two losses — his first of the year — were to ranked NCS wrestlers. He is 25-2 on the season.

JV boys

Richard Ramos led the Middletown JV boys with a second-place finish at 113 pounds while Kayden Menzio, 3-1 on the day, came in third at 106 pounds. Tyler Torres went 2-2 and finished fourth at 138 pounds while J.J. Gerst went 3-2 and placed fourth at 220 pounds.

Friday matches

Middletown went 2-2 in four conference makeup matches on Friday at Willits High School, leaving the Mustangs at 4-2 on the season and tied with Upper Lake for third place behind Willits (6-0) and Clear Lake (5-1) in the CMC standings. Middletown wraps up its conference regular season Tuesday against Clear Lake and Kelseyville at Kelseyville.

Middletown beat Fort Bragg and St. Helena and lost to Willits, 48-30, and Upper Lake, 42-40, during Friday’s action.
