UKIAH — Anchored by weight division championships from Maddy Young and Bella Fernandez, the Upper Lake High School’s girls wrestling team placed third out of 21 schools Saturday at the Redwood Empire Classic in Ukiah.

Upper Lake's Maddy Young went 3-0 to win her weight class Saturday in Ukiah.

Only host Ukiah with 115 points and Granada High School of Livermore with 71.5 points, large schools with enrollments of 1,600-plus and 2,200-plus, respectively, placed higher than Upper Lake with 69 points. Middletown was next with 66 points.

Young won all three of her matches at 128 pounds, pinning the No. 1 seed in the finals, while Fernandez went 2-0 at 118 pounds, both wins by pin. Fernandez is 25-8 on the season.

Tatum Salas also racked up a bunch of team points for the Cougars with a third-place finish at 123 pounds, going 3-1.

Varsity boys

Damian Wurm won a first-place medal for the Upper Lake boys at 113 pounds while Bradley Sneathen added a second-place medal at 285 pounds.

Bella Fernandez went 3-0 at 118 pounds.

Schedule

The Cougars are scheduled to take part in the Division III North Coast Section Team Dual Championships on Saturday at Redwood High School in Larkspur. Before that, they’ll close out their Coastal Mountain Conference regular season with a tri-meet Tuesday in Fort Bragg. The CMC Championships are Feb. 12 in Middletown, followed by the NCS Championships Feb. 18-19 (boys at Union City, girls at Albany). The CIF State Championships are Feb. 24-26 in Bakersfield.
