MAXWELL — A five-run bottom of the second staked Maxwell to a 6-0 lead in its 11-8 win over the Upper Lake High School softball team Saturday in the consolation championship game of the Maxwell Tournament.

“There were a lot of hit batters early, it was just a bad inning for us,” Upper Lake head coach Nick Williamson said. “We persevered through and did better as we went along. We were climbing our way back in at the end, but we couldn’t get all the way back.”

Upper Lake (2-4) scored four times in the top of the sixth, which proved to be the final inning because of time constraints, to make it close.

Lexi Wurm went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs to spark the Cougars at the plate. Zoey Petrie went 2-for-4 with a double.

Losing pitcher Nya Marcks struggled with her control early on and ended up hitting five and walking four while going the distance for the Cougars. She also struck out seven.

Upper Lake had a player honored on the All-Tournament team but Williamson declined to reveal who it was because he hadn’t told the player yet.

The Cougars return to action Tuesday at Kelseyville. First pitch is 4 p.m.
