MIDDLETOWN — Cora Holley is the cleanup hitter for the Middletown High School junior varsity softball team and when the sophomore stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh Wednesday afternoon with her team trailing Ukiah 11-10 and with teammate Breanna Pyzer standing at first base with no outs, Holley did what a cleanup hitter is supposed to do in those situations.
She went yard.
Holley’s walk-off home run, the third home run of the day for the Mustangs, lifted Middletown to a 12-11 non-league win against the visiting Wildcats. It also was the season opener for the Mustangs.
Pyzer, who blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the second, singled to start the Middletown seventh and scored moments later on Holley’s homer.
Amanda Hart also homered for the Mustangs, a two-run shot in the fourth inning.
Winning pitcher Brooklyn Wood threw a complete game.
Middletown hosts Lower Lake on Saturday at 11 p.m. in the North Central League I opener for both teams.
