SANTA ROSA — Only three golfers shot in the 70s Thursday afternoon and two of them were from St. Helena as the Saints scored their second straight Coastal Mountain Conference South win, this time at Sugarloaf Golf Course in Santa Rosa.

Micah Meraz carded a 7-over-par on the par-64 course, formerly known as Oakmont East, to earn medalist honors. His teammate, Andrew Hileman, finished with 79 as St. Helena improved to 10-0 in the South standings with a winning team total of 319 (combined four lowest individual rounds). Middletown, led by Cooper Johnson’s 78, came in second with 340 and is now 8-2 through the first two matches of the 2022 season.

Rounding out the team scoring was Technology with 434 and Kelseyville with 462. The Credo and Victory Christian squads were incomplete, meaning they couldn’t field at least four golfers.

Other Middletown rounds had Luke Hoogendoorn at 84, Dom Williams at 86 and Christian Klinger at 92. For Kelseyville, Lander Hockett led the team with 111, Nate Sherman had 114, Michael Wiser finished with 117 and Lizzy Malaspina had 120.

The South golfers received a warm welcome from course management, according to Kelseyville head coach John Berry.

“They rolled out the red carpet for us and took team photos for their Facebook page,” Berry said. “They wanted to show that they support youth golf.”

The playing conditions were “idyllic,” according to Berry, with the temperature in the mid-70s and just a bit of a breeze.

The CMC South visits Middletown’s home course, Hidden Valley Lake, next Wednesday. The South season opened a week ago at Adams Springs on Cobb Mountain, Kelseyville’s home course.
