BROOKTRAILS — Clear Lake High School’s Nathon Lopez has been the medalist in each of the first three Coastal Mountain Conference North golf matches this season, the senior once again earning that distinction Tuesday as he fired the low round of 62 on the par-56 Brooktrails course near Willits.

And as an added perk, Lopez helped Clear Lake win its second straight North match as the Cardinals finished with the low team round of 296 followed by Fort Bragg with 307, Willits with 385 and Mendocino with 390.

“He’s just very consistent,” Clear Lake head coach Ted Mattila said of Lopez, who had one birdie during his round.

Brooktrails, a nine-hole course, has eight par-3 holes and a solitary par-4, but it’s hardly a birdie-fest-type course, according to Mattila.

“Some of those par-3s are pretty tough,” Mattila said. “The course was in very nice shape.”

The team win moves the Cardinals (8-1) atop the North standings with Fort Bragg (7-2) right behind them.

Miles Mattina of Clear Lake had the day’s fourth-best round with a 73 while teammate Peyton Ewing had the fifth-best round with a 74. Rounding out Clear Lake scoring was Keara Alonso with 88. Also competing for the Cardinals were Brooke Hinchcliff with a 93 and Jadan Martinez with a 119. Only the low four individual rounds count for team scoring purposes.

Martinez was playing in his first high school match, according to Mattila.

“He was getting his feet wet,” Mattila said.

Mattina had Clear Lake’s other birdie on the day.

North golfers enjoyed pleasant weather for the second match in a row, according to Mattila. The conference visits Buckingham Golf and Country Club next Tuesday.
