MIDDLETOWN — Cora Holley hit an inside-the-park two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and the Middletown Mustangs went on to beat the Lower Lake Trojans 17-7 in a junior varsity softball game called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule Thursday afternoon in Middletown.
Middletown improved to 1-1 in North Central League I play and 2-1 overall.
Winning pitcher Brooklyn Wood went the distance, striking out four and walking four. She received plenty of offensive support from her teammates, including Holley (2-for-5), Jaylee Davis (3-for-5) and Taylor Thompson (3-for-5 with a triple).
Middletown scored six times in the bottom of the third inning to break open a close game and pull ahead 11-4.
The Mustangs don’t play again until April 12 at Fort Bragg.
