SANTA ROSA — Sonoma Academy had just one hit and still beat the Upper Lake Cougars 11-0 in a five-inning North Central League II varsity baseball game on Tuesday in Santa Rosa.
Upper Lake also had just one hit — a fourth-inning single by Johnny Gozony — while dropping to 1-1 in the NCL II standings and 4-3 overall.
Playing their first game since March 31 and with only a couple of practices during nearly two weeks off, Upper Lake head coach Brian Milhaupt said the Cougars got exactly out of the game what they put into it — practically nothing.
“Sonoma Academy played three games on (spring) break, we didn’t play any and we’ve had only a couple of practices since our last game,” Milhaupt said. “It was a rought day.”
The first two of three Upper Lake pitchers used in the game — Bradley Sneathen and Gozony — combined to walk 13 batters and hit two others. They allowed all of Sonoma Academy’s runs in the first two innings. The only saving grace were the two scoreless innings thrown by Will Henry to close out the game. He allowed no hits, struck out four and walked none.
“That’s not a complete day by any stretch of the imagination,” Sneathen said. “Hopefully we can bounce back from this.”
The Cougars return to action Friday at home against Credo, weather permitting. Rain is in the forecast.
