Audition notice for Shakespeare at the Lake

Come one, come all to auditions for Shakespeare at the Lake!  After two years of online productions, Shakespeare at the Lake (SATL) will once again return to the stage with a live performance. Set on another habitable planet, the 2022 production of “Twelfth Night, Or What You Will,” transports you back in time with a classical comedy, and forward into the future of interplanetary colonization. “Twelfth Night” is an engaging comedy with heartfelt love, trickery and deceit, and, of course, mistaken identity. The production will also include original Shakespeare songs, with musical accompaniment performed live alongside the action. Performance dates are scheduled for July 30 and 31 at Library Park in Lakeport, and August 5 through 7 at Austin Park in Clearlake.

Auditions will be held on Thursday, May 19 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 21 at 2 p.m. at the Mendocino College Lake Center.  No experience is necessary. Everyone (high school age and up) with an interest in performing is encouraged to attend auditions. Audition materials can be accessed at www.laketheatre.org. Those cast will be required to register for THE 220 at Mendocino College. Scholarships are available. Rehearsals will take place two-four evenings during the week (depending on your role) from late May through the performance dates. Questions about auditions or the play can be sent the director, John Tomlinson jtomlinson@mendocino.edu or (707) 355-2211.

Shakespeare at the Lake is a co-production of Mendocino College and Lake County Theatre Company, partnering with Lake County Friends of Mendocino College, City of Lakeport, and City of Clearlake.

Forest Service announces 3 projects to receive $6.7M in funding

Three projects benefitting four California national forests received $6.7 million in funding through the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program (CFLRP). Along with partner support, these projects aim to reduce risk of severe wildfires, support local economies, create jobs, and enhance forest and watershed health. These funds were made available through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and annual congressional appropriations.

The selected projects are part of a recent announcement made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture highlighting $31.1 million for 15 projects across eight states.

The first project continues thanks to funding from previous years, and the remaining two are newly funded Fiscal Year 2022 projects:

  • $757,000 to Dinkey Collaborative: A 154,000-acre project that sits in the epicenter of unprecedented fuel loading due to the Southern Sierran tree mortality that has previously received $7.6 million in CFLRP funding. This project is on the Sierra National Forest.
  • $3 million to Western Klamath Mountains Fire and Fire Resiliency Project: A 1.2-million-acre project to prepare the landscape for frequent, yet smaller, lower-intensity wildfires to protect communities and critical transportation routes. This work will increase watershed health and ecosystem resilience, including in areas traditionally managed by the Karuk Tribe. The work will also prepare the land for traditional burning. This project is on the Six Rivers and Klamath national forests.
  • $3 million in the North Yuba River watershed: A 356,000-acre project in a watershed that provides clean water for homes, communities, businesses, and ecosystems. Funding supports an urgent need to mitigate risks from wildfire in areas susceptible to insects, disease, and drought. Treatments will promote forest conditions that are more resilient, while restoring watershed health and native biodiversity. This project is on the Tahoe National Forest.

Started in 2009, the 24 funded landscape projects under the CFLRP has advanced treatments to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire on more than 4.5 million acres – the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. The projects also supported more than $2.3 billion in total labor income and engaged more than 420 organizations in local collaborative work alongside landowners and interested individuals. These landscape restoration activities established 224,000 acres of forest vegetation by planting, seeding, and natural regeneration while also reducing or eradicating invasive plants across 210,000 acres. Restoration also enhanced more than 1,760 miles of stream habitat.
