Cooke, Garrity win two events at St. Helena

Lower Lake, Clear Lake, Upper Lake track teams notch firsts

ST. HELENA — Lower Lake High School’s Elijah Cooke dominated the field in the varsity boys shotput and discus Wednesday during a Coastal Mountain Conference track meet at St. Helena High School where Clear Lake, Upper Lake, Calistoga and host St. Helena also took part.

Varsity boys

Cooke won the shotput with a toss of 37 feet, 2 inches to easily beat out Kai Randall-Darter (35-1) of St. Helena. Tristan Ales of Lower Lake was third (33-11).

In the discus, Cooke and teammate Allen Calderon finished one-two, Cook at 98-10 and Calderon at 87-3.

Other event winners included Lower Lake’s Thomas Jones in the jump (5-2) and Mitchell Noble in the triple jump (36-6), Clear Lake’s Orel Gosman in the long jump (18-8), and Upper Lake’s Donovan Fernandez in the 3,200 meters (12 minutes, 4.97 seconds).

Clear Lake’s 4×100 relay team of Rodolfo Arias, Ayden Williamson, Tyler Haskell and Jadin Vestal also came in first (47.43).

County athletes also racked up a bunch of second- and third-place finishes. Lower Lake’s Leo Brown was the runner-up to St. Helena’s Cleo McClain (2:10.20) in the 800 meters at 2:15.03, Clear Lake’s Gosman was second in the 300 hurdles (52.81) and the triple jump (34-3), Lower Lake’s Calderon was second in the discus while Noble was second in the long jump (18-6).

Another second went to the Lower Lake 4×400 relay team of Brown, Noble, Jon Fabela and Adrian Salazar at 3:54.30.

Collecting thirds were Lower Lake’s Fabela in the 200 meters (25.14), Jose Hernandez in the 1,600 meters (5:16.15), Ales in the shotput, Jones in the triple jump (33-5), and Clear Lake’s Liam Davis in the 110 hurdles (22.07).

Upper Lake’s Erick Espinoza was fourth in the 200 (25.53) and Clear Lake’s Arias was fifth (25.64). Fernandez also had a fourth in the 1,600 meters while Lower Lake’s Sandro Bejar was fourth in the 800 (2:51.75) and Lower Lake’s Salazar was fourth in the 400 (58.26). Clear Lake’s Williamson added a fourth in the 300 hurdles (58.72) while teammate Gosman finished fifth in the `100 (11.99).

Girls

Clear Lake’s Hannah Garrity won the 1,600 (5:19.50) and 3,200 (11:58.27) while Lower Lake’s Gabby Pelcastre tied Calistoga Crystal Vigil for first place in the long jump at 13-11. The Lower Lake 4×100 relay team of Yamilet Saucedo, Maya Holland, Gabby Pelcastre and Laniese Lopez added another first in 53.85.

Lower Lake’s Katelyn Ferrell registered seconds in the shotput (23-10) and discus (68-0).

Thirds went to Lower Lake’s Evelyn Campbell in the shotput (21-5) and Lopez in the long jump (12-7).

JV boys

Charles Jones won the 100 meters (12.10), 200 (24.83) and long jump (18-0) in the junior varsity boys division, part of a strong effort by Lower Lake’s squad.

Other Lower Lake firsts went to Aaron Martinez in the 400 (1:03.28), Ricardo Reyes in the 800 (3:05.78), Joel Rios in the 300 hurdles (52.77), Marco Gutierrez in the discus (51-1) and Stephen Felder in the triple jump (35-9).

Lower Lake second-place finishes went to Fidel Alvarez-Ramos in both the 100 (13.14) and 200 (26.40), Rios in the 400 (1:04.39), Gutierrez in the shotput (19-10), and Felder in the long jump (17-0). Third-place finishers were Felder in the 100 (13.32) and 200 (26.74) and Alvarez-Ramos in the long jump (15-2).
