UPDATED:

A wildfire burning in Southern California’s San Gabriel Mountains has prompted evacuations of residents near Wrightwood.

The Sheep Fire began Saturday along Highway 2 (Angeles Crest Highway) and by Monday morning had burned 940 acres. The fire was 5% contained, San Bernardino County Fire said.

Evacuation orders covered the rural neighborhoods of Wild Horse Canyon and Desert Front northeast of Wrightwood as well as an area of the town itself. Those zones are shown on the map above in red.

The rest of Wrightwood is under an evacuation warning. An evacuation center has been set up at Serrano High School in Phelan.

Wrightwood, a town of about 4,000 people, draws tourists for skiing, hiking and other outdoor activities in the Angeles National Forest. It’s about a 75-mile drive from downtown Los Angeles. The Pacific Crest Trail passes within about a mile of the town; as of Monday, it remained open.
