FORT BRAGG >> Westshore’s pee wee team opened the 2022 Mendo-Lake Empire Youth Football League season with a 12-6 road win Saturday against Fort Bragg at Timberwolf Stadium.

The Cardinals (1-0) rallied from an early 6-0 deficit, the result of a lost fumble that Fort Bragg quickly turned into a touchdown. The lead didn’t last long. On Westshore’s next offensive play Luke Percaccio broke loose on a 70-yard scoring run to tie the game.

Both teams settled into a defensive struggle after that. It wasn’t until until the third quarter that Westshore pushed ahead to stay 12-6 on a 45-yard Percassio run, that after four consecutive false start penalties against the Cardinals moved the ball back from the Fort Bragg 25-yard line.

The Cardinals’ defense did the rest, led by Anthony “Foxx” Crespo, Gabriel Collier and Anthony Burrows.

Percaccio nearly added an insurance touchdown late in the fourth quarter but he was brought down at the Fort Bragg 1-yard line following a 30-yard run. The game ended moments later.

In other action involving Westshore teams, the junior varsity beat Fort Bragg 28-18 while the varsity lost 7-6. No statistics were reported for those games.

Westshore’s teams are home Saturday to play Cloverdale.
