CRESCENT CITY — The Kelseyville Knights fell 71-13 to the Del Norte Warriors in the season opener for both of these varsity football teams Friday night in Crescent City.
“We weren’t ready to play at their speed,” Kelseyville head coach Erick Larsen said of the Warriors (1-0), who led 28-0 after one quarter and 56-0 by halftime. “Del Norte has a solid football program and we’re just green.”
Despite being overmatched by the Warriors, Larsen said he was encouraged by his team’s continued hard play in the second half, which included a 15-yard rushing touchdown run by quarterback Luke Watkins and a 20-yard TD pass from Watkins to Reme Strong.
“That gives us something to build on,” Larsen said.
Del Norte also won the junior varsity game 14-9.
Kelseyville (0-1) has a bye next week and is home Sept. 9 to play another Humboldt-Del Norte team in the Fortuna Huskies (0-1), who dropped their season opener 41-19 to University Prep on Friday night in Redding.
