LAKEPORT — Touchdown runs by John Pasalo Jr. in the second quarter and Nathan Heath in the fourth quarter propelled the Westshore Cardinals to a 14-7 win over Cloverdale in a junior varsity-level game Saturday during Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League action at Don Owens Stadium in Lakeport.

Westshore takes a 2-0 record into the Labor Day weekend when all of the league’s teams are off for the holiday. The Cardinals return to action Sept. 10 at Willits.

A combination of Pasalo Jr., Zeke Shatell and Paxton Villanueva runs moved the ball down the field and set up Westshore’s first touchdown, by Pasalo Jr. Shatell ran in the extra point to make it 7-0.

Shatell picked off a pass to stop Cloverdale’s next possession and preserve Westshore’s lead going into halftime.

Westshore used the same formula in the fourth quarter for its final touchdown as runs by Pasalo Jr., Shatell and Villanueva advanced the football and allowed Heath to cap the drive with his quarterback keeper for the touchdown. Heath’s pass to Shatell on the conversion made it 14-0.

After scoring later in the quarter and cutting Westshore’s lead to 14-7, Cloverdale was on the move again until Heath intercepted a pass with 15 seconds remaining to seal the Cardinals’ victory.

Pasalo Jr. led Westshore in rushing with 67 yards on 13 carries. Next were Shatell (11 for 64) and Villanueva (10 for 45).
