UPPER LAKE — Playing its first game of the season, the Lower Lake High School boys soccer team beat the Upper Lake Cougars, who were playing their 10th game, 5-1 in non-league action Thursday afternoon at Upper Lake High School.
Playing in triple-digit heat to start the game was tough on both teams, according to Upper Lake head coach Thomas Santana.
“The first half was intense, but after halftime it started to cool off a little bit,” Santana said.
Lower Lake (1-0) scored two quick goals in the first half to take a lead it would not relinquish. A goal by Sammy Avalos brought Upper Lake to within 2-1, but the Trojans added a third goal before halftime for a 3-1 lead.
“Lower Lake came out hot,” Santana said.
The Trojans padded their lead with two second-half goals. Lower Lake scoring was not reported.
“They played solid defense,” Santana said of the Trojans.
Manny Villalobos assisted on Avalos’ goal.
The Cougars (2-8) are home Monday to play Willits as part of boys-girls doubleheader. The boys play at 5:30 p.m. followed by the girls at 7:15 p.m.
