SANTA ROSA — Clear Lake High School’s Hannah Garrity and the entire Middletown High School cross country team comprised part of the field Saturday during the annual Viking Invitational at the 2.0-mile Spring Lake course in Santa Rosa.

The Viking draws the very best cross country runners from small and large schools throughout the Redwood Empire. Overall winners were Hanne Thomsen, a sophomore from Montgomery High School, in 10 minutes, 41.4 seconds, which just missed being a girls course record, and Jude DeVries, a Montgomery High School senior, in 9:43.9.
Garrity, a state qualifier for Clear Lake a year ago as a sophomore, placed a solid sixth overall in the junior-senior girls race at 13:05.4, the fastest time among Coastal Mountain Conference participants. Middletown’s Nicole Pyzer, a senior, placed 13th overall in 13:43.1 while Pyzer’s teammates, Issy Barriga (14:59.9) and Maya Leonard (15:23.8), were 31st and 33rd, respectively.
In the freshman-sophomore girls race, Middletown’s Cat Barriga came in 35th in 15:00.7 while teammate Holly McComb was 55th in 16:58.
Boys
Middletown’s Dean McComas finished 37th in the junior boys race at 13:18. In the sophomore boys race, Middletown’s Bryton Caviness (13:20) came in 43rd, Aiden Cadwallader (13:28) was 48th, and Caden Gotz (14:43) was 56th.

Lake County’s cross country teams return to action Wednesday. Clear Lake and Middletown travel to Fort Bragg for a North Central League I meet.
