Miles Hayes stepped in for head coach Thomas Santana to lead the Cougars as Santana recovers from an illness. He has been cleared to rejoin his players on the sidelines next week when Upper Lake hosts Mendocino on Wednesday and South Fork on Friday.

“We played really bad, really sloppy,” Santana of Upper Lake’s latest effort. “We let our emotions take control.”

Upper Lake built a 3-2 halftime lead on goals from Avalos just 30 seconds into the game, Avalos again at the four-minute mark of the first half, and Villalobos at the 24th minute.

In the second half it was Xavier Snow who scored each of the Cougars’ first two goals. Villalobos picked up his second goal with three minutes remaining.

“We had some issues on the back line,” Santana said of the team’s defensive struggles against Potter Valley. “There was a lot of confusion. We picked it up towards the end.”
